It is recommended that you flush your water heater once per year as a means to prolong the life of a water heater. This is especially helpful on our water system as we have naturally occurring minerals that can settle in your water heater as the water is heated and for periods of time when no water is moving through the hot side of your water lines. If you have been away for a period of time it is a good idea to allow the water to flush through for a few minutes as water heaters can develop sulfur compounds that cause odors in the water. If and when you choose to flush your water heater tank be sure to turn off the electric breaker and drain the hose to the outside to prevent a water spill inside the house. Also be cautious as the water may be extremely hot.
We recommend pleated filters as opposed to cotton wound and cotton mesh filters. We also recommend using 50 Micron size filters since the human eye cannot see particles below that size without magnification. When changing your filter it is best to remove the old filter, put the house back on without a new filter first and flush your line a couple of minutes before replacing with a new filter to avoid having your new filter accumulate quickly with the sediment that has settled in your line due to the slowing action that is inherent with filtration.
Winter weather can bring different challenges to keeping the water flowing. Frozen pipes can cause large loss of water not only for you but also your neighbor. If you are going to be away from home during the winter months please turn off your main shut off valve inside your house or call us to turn your service off at the meter. A little prevention could save you a lot even if you maintain a heat source while you are away.
In order to maintain our supply of potable water and adequate storage for peak times we ask that you not fill pools from your residential hose bibb. Example ( a pool 15' x 30' ) has a surface area of 450 square feet. It takes approximately 280 gallons per inch. If that pool had evaporated 6 inches of water it would require 1683 gallons to fill it back up. Additionally the empty pool would require 15300 gallons. That is the equivalent of 3.5 average household's usage for one month. Several pool fillings at a given time can have a big impact on our water system, especially during peak hours and just before peak hours. Please have your water hauled in for complete fillings and spread out your topping off over several days a little bit at a time if needed so as to not create undo demand on the supply.
